Patricia Paludanus Galerie Wilms
Dutch born artist Patricia Paludanus (1974) lives and works in Amsterdam. However, it might be closer to the truth to say she actually resides in the topography of her drawings: meticulous, laborious works that have their genesis in the unspoken dreams and mindscapes of her imagination. Yet, far from being a hermit, she invites the viewer to enter these intimate spaces and explore abstract, surreal worlds that may unlock the unconscious.

Having rediscovered the colored pencil after decades of working in media as diverse as kinetic art, animation, photography, and light sculptures, Paludanus uses this material in a curious, unrecognizable way, hard-edge and graphic, applying almost pulsating combinations of pigments in thick, dense coats that she then burnishes, a process that makes the paper’s textured surface look like leather.

Turning color into object – something to hold, feel, taste – and transforming a sheet into a portal, she uses a process of free association to draw herself – and us – back to an early magical seeing that we all must have experienced when our eyes were brand new.

Patricia Paludanus has exhibited her drawings both in the Netherlands and internationally, with BDDW gallery in New York City, Miami Beach and Milan and in The Hague at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as part of the U.S. Art in Embassies program.

Her work is supported by a Proven Talent working grant from Mondriaan Fund.

“Have you ever had that dream in which you discover a secret room, full of possibility, hidden behind a door that somehow never caught your attention?

– I have found that room.
When, after working in many different types of media over the years, I decided to embark on what I thought would be a short trip back to my roots, and put aside more sophisticated tools to pick up the good old colored pencils I had not touched since childhood, I admit I was driven by the hope to rediscover something of the magic I experienced when the world was bright and new.
But I would’t have dared to expect this personal quest to be a portal to a chamber unseen and untrodden, where that very magic would be waiting for me, wide awake, whole and untouched.”

“Patricia Paludanus, a Dutch artist based in Amsterdam, studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Enschede, specializing in media art and photography. She has worked in many forms of media such as video, animation and sound, but in recent years rediscovered the humble tools of her early childhood when looking for a magic that seemed lost. She picked up an old set of colored pencils – and has not put them down since. Paludanus describes using each color as similar to hearing a musical chord or tasting food – a physical sensation that connects to her memories and dreams – and applies pigments in such dense layers that color becomes an object. In her drawings, combining hard edges and stark shapes with nuanced grades of color and an almost velvet skin, she creates landscapes of a surreal nature that open doors to the unknown spaces within us.” (BDDW Annex Gallery)

“In the world created by Patricia Paludanus there are the same earthy hues that can be found in our usual one, although punctuated by kaleidoscopic glittering particles. The abstract architecture and the wonderfully improbable cosmogony reveal that it belongs to a supernatural sphere, which Paludanus reaches through her meditative artistic practice and where she leads us through the path drawn by her pencil lines.” (Michela D’Acquisto)
